Dieter Roelstraete

Dieter Roelstraete is a writer, editor, and curator based in Berlin and Antwerp. He is a curator at MuHKA, Antwerp, and one of the editors of Afterall journal. His writing has appeared in many magazines and books, including the catalogue of the 2008 Berlin Biennial, When Things Cast No Shadow.

    Dieter Roelstraete

    Auguste Orts: Correspondence is an exhibition catalogue accompanying the same-titled exhibition at M HKA, Antwerp (Summer 2010). Auguste Orts is a production platform set up by the Brussels-based artists Herman Asselberghs, Sven Augustijnen, Manon de Boer, and Anouk De Clercq. Identifying themselves as visual artists, they work primarily with film and video.

    In an accompanying essay, T. J. Demos writes: “While comprised of the singular and at times divergent approaches of its members, the group's work shares... a simultaneous commitment to... the political potential of filmmaking (imagining experimental modes of life, contesting oppressive systems) and... the subtle craftwork of aesthetics (the perceptual attentiveness to the specific nature of form and medium).”

    The catalogue also includes an introductory essay by M HKA director Bart De Baere, a round table discussion between the curator Dieter Roelstraete and the artists, in-depth texts on and color illustrations of each artist's work, and several letters exchanged between Roelstraete and the members.

    A Line Made by Walking

    An illustrated study of a work that marks the transition from minimalism to a new mode of practice encompassing conceptual art, land art, and performance art.

    In 1967, Richard Long, then twenty-two years old and a student at Saint Martin's School of Art in London, walked back and forth along a straight line in the grass in the English countryside, leaving a track that he then photographed in black and white. The resulting work, A Line Made by Walking, was not only the starting point for Long's career as an artist but also a landmark for a new kind of art emerging in Europe and the Americas. The formal simplicity of Long's artwork suggested a relation to minimalism, but its location outside the gallery context and its suggestion of bodily actions also connected it to a new generation of artists whose work combined the organic, the temporary, the nonmaterial, and the performative to offer a critique of the art system and its language, forms, and values. Long's work bridged the concerns of his North American and European counterparts, connecting the industrial scale of Robert Smithson to the modesty of Gilberto Zorio, the exercises in dematerialization of Robert Morris with the organic forms of Alighiero e Boetti, and the performance of Yvonne Rainer with that of Joseph Beuys. Although A Line Made by Walking is an instantly recognizable work, no detailed analysis of this foundational piece has yet been published. At a time when Richard Long's career is being celebrated and reassessed, this study by writer and curator Dieter Roelstraete could not be more timely.

    Jos de Gruyter, Harald Thys, and Nav Haq

    Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys's art casts a merciless perspective on reality. Through their numerous artistic approaches—including installations, video, drawing, sculpture, performance, and photographs—the artist duo visualize their imaginings of the parallel world inherent within the modern human psyche, along with how it manifests itself in the everyday aspects of life and civic conformity. Everything from work, leisure, and family, to social class, masculinity, and marginalization are envisaged through convening an unlikely cast of nonprofessional actors, family members, friends, beards, objects, and mannequins alike, often in banal, homespun settings rife with awkward power dynamics.

    This book accompanies their major exhibition at M HKA of the same title—the term they use for their particular conception of the parallel world. Narratives and criticism by Michael Van den Abeele, Nav Haq, Jennifer Krasinksi, Dieter Roelstraete, and artist Peter Wächtler are presented along with photos, drawings, and text illustrating the unsteady barriers and tense contact between “Optimundus” and the real world.

    Zin Taylor

    Zin Taylor has become known internationally for his elaborate installations encompassing elements of performance and sculpture along with drawing, printing, and video. Narration is an essential ingredient of much of Taylor's multifaceted work, and his stories are often culled from the undergrowth of popular culture (more specifically underground music scenes) and contemporary art lore. Journalism, research, storytelling: not surprisingly, both the spoken word and the printed word figure prominently in Taylor's practice (the artist himself belonging to a generation of practitioners for whom a definite facility with language, both on a theoretical and literary level, has become a key aspect of artistic identity), and many of his installations have also been accompanied by publications and/or artist books.

    This artist book is published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Ursula Blickle Stiftung, “The Units,” from May 29 to July 10, 2011.
