    The Silent University, initiated by artist Ahmet Öğüt in 2012, is an autonomous platform for academics who cannot share their knowledge due to their status of residence, because their degrees are not recognized or regaining access to academia is blocked for other reasons. It is a solidary school by refugees, asylum seekers and migrants who contribute to the program as lecturers, consultants and researchers.

    The Silent University proposes a new institution outside of the restrictions of existing universities, migration laws and the other bureaucratic or juridical obstacles many migrants face. At the same time it mimics the idea of exiting universities, using their representational logics by developing alternative structures of pedagogy beyond border politics, race/ethnicity and normative education.

    This first comprehensive publication about the Silent University introduces the initiative and contextualizes it in the wider framework of both radical pedagogy and socially engaged art projects. In addition, all current branches of the Silent University—in Amman, Athens, Hamburg, London, Mülheim/Ruhr, and Stockholm—describe their very different achievements as well as their struggles and failures.

    The book contextualizes this initiative within a broader picture of migration policies, critical pedagogy, artistic involvement and institutional engagement. It also hopes to be an introduction for all those who might want to get involved in the Silent University—as contributors, lecturers, students in the existing branches, or by initiating new SUs wherever they are needed: a need which is becoming urgent in more and more cities and countries all around the world.

    This book is published as an edition of Impulse Theater Festival, which initiated the foundation of Silent University Ruhr in Mülheim in June 2015.

    Truth Is Concrete: A Handbook for Artistic Strategies in Real Politics takes the possibility of concrete truth as a working hypothesis and looks for direct action and concrete knowledge: for an art that not only represents and documents, but engages in specific political and social situations—and for an activism that not only acts for the sake of acting but searches for intelligent, creative means of self-empowerment. This book is the second manifestation under this title; the first materialized as a twenty-four-hour, seven-day marathon camp that took place in the frame of the steirischer herbst festival in Graz, Austria, in September 2012.

    This handbook is a stand-alone publication, emphasizing the “usefulness” of the different artistic approaches collected. It is a toolbox and a manual with contributions by key protagonists in this field. One hundred texts describe very different strategies and tactics, written by their inventors and/or practitioners from all over the world, mapping the broad field of engaged art and artistic activism today. Additional essays focus on the philosophy, structures, and modalities behind the many battles to make this world a better place.

    Contemporary ideas of history have bid farewell to the concept of one big narration as a hegemonic product that excludes other histories. With regard to the Holocaust this means that individual biographies of victims and testimonies from eyewitnesses form the archival corpus of this history. But using individual testimonies as historical revelation is not enough.

    Inspired by the Israeli memorial day Yom HaShoah, the holiday that commemorates victims and resistance fighters of the Holocaust, Yael Bartana's Two Minutes of Standstill took place on June 28, 2013, at 11 a.m., as part of the Impulse Theater Biennale in the city of Cologne. A symbolic interruption of everyday life, Two Minutes of Standstill was a political act, a social sculpture, and a collective performance. Historically, the act of a silent standstill is a way to commemorate the dead. Bartana's artwork, however, also calls for a reflection on the present. During the preparation for the performance a range of reactions occurred that were both positive and critical. What does the specific way this history is told in Germany tell us about the country today? And why did Bartana's performance provoke such strong reactions?

    This catalogue is a documentation of Two Minutes of Standstill, revealing the ideas behind the work and the process that led to its realization. The book includes several essays that discuss possible interpretations and consequences of the artwork, questioning the role of history and commemoration in Germany today.

    A crossdisciplinary inquiry into the practices and forms of assembly making, through multiple times and geographies.

    How does the spatial organization and architecture of assemblies promote or hinder debate and collective decisionmaking? What are the material, rhetorical, and affective devices involved in forms of assembling? Through which scripts and rituals does an assembly become an ephemeral collective or an institution?

    From ancestral practices in the indigenous territories of Brazil to the forgotten legacy of the communal assemblies of medieval Europe, from global experiments in radical democracy to the material history of parliaments “from above” and “from below,” Forms of Assembly makes the form of the assembly the specific object of a crossdisciplinary inquiry. Exploring and weaving together the aesthetic, anthropological, historical, and political aspects of assembly making, it questions the implications of forms on our political imaginary and agency, challenging the ways in which people gather, and how these forms of gathering shape how they think, speak, and act together. 

    Forms of Assembly features commissioned texts and conversations with artists, architects, cultural theorists, social scientists, and organizers that provide original perspectives on the subject, as well as a selection of experimental assembly designs, including three new proposals specially conceived for the publication.
